OXFORD: Donald E. Mayo, 89, died on Monday, September 4 in Harrington Memorial Hospital, Southbridge.He leaves behind his ex-wife, Irene L. (Pion) Mayo; his daughter; Sharon Corricelli and her husband Robert; his sisters Marjorie "Honey" Charest of Largo, FL, and Elizabeth "Betty" Trombley and her husband Cliff, of Summerville, SC; his brother-in-law Victor Pion; his sister-in-law Alice Vandal; as well as many nieces and nephews. In addition to the family he left behind, there were also a multitude of friends, including his best friend and neighbor, Susan Young. He is predeceased by his son Steven Robert Mayo; his brothers, Earl Mayo and his wife Doris, and Robert Mayo and wife Leona; his sister Shirley "Pat" Charest and husband Alfred "Pete", as well as brother-in-law's Ernest Charest, Edward McGaugh and his wife Claire, Roland Vandal, Leo Pion and wife Irene, and sister-in-law Loretta Pion.
He was born in Worcester the son of Joseph A. and Lillian (LaBombard) Mayo. He was enlisted in the Army during the Korean War and served as an Atomic Soldier. Donald was a sheet metal worker retiring after 20 years. He once owned his own restaurant, as well as a part-time catering business.
He loved all animals, especially dogs. He owned several dogs over his lifetime, and was extremely devoted to each and every one. In his spare time, he enjoyed many hobbies ranging from golfing, fishing, trap shooting, and hunting. He was an avid reader, as well as loved working in his garden and cooking and baking. He was also a longtime member of the Auburn Sportsman's Club.
A Celebration of life will be held Sunday, November 12 from 2-6 P.M. in the Auburn Sportsman's Club located at 50 Elm St, Auburn. J.HENRI MORIN & SON FUNERAL HOME, 23 Maple Terr., Spencer is assisting the family with arrangements.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105, or a No Kill Animal Shelter.
