WORCESTER: John W. Devereux, 79, died on Wednesday, September 25th in UMass Hospital, Worcester. He was raised in Spencer and moved to Worcester in 1990.
He leaves his husband and life partner, John J. Bersey of Worcester, his brother James Devereux and his sister Marjorie Devereux, along with many cousins.
He was born in Worcester, son of Francis W. and Viola (Hastings) Devereux. He graduated from David Prouty High School and Stockbridge School of Agriculture at the University of Massachusetts in Amherst. He was employed by Bemis Farms Nursery for several years and then U.P.S. for 31 years before retiring in 2000.
He was a former 6-year member of the Massachusetts National Guard serving during the Vietnam era and a retired member of the Teamsters Local 170 of Worcester. He was also a former member of Our Lady of the Rosary Church.
He enjoyed gardening around his home, walking 2 miles a day and riding his bicycle on the bicycle trails of New England, sometimes with his faithful dog "Maggie-Mae" in a trailer attached to his bicycle. He was a proud friend of Bill W. and thanked God each day for his sobriety of over 30 years.
A Memorial Mass will be held on Tuesday, October 8th at 11:00 AM in Our Lady of the Rosary Church. The J.HENRI MORIN & SON FUNERAL HOME, 23 Maple Terr., Spencer is assisting the family with arrangements.
