WORCESTER: Neil Patrick Scannell, DO, 50, died suddenly, Wednesday,
Dec.6th. at his home. He leaves his parents; Paul W. and Maureen (Lucey)
Scannell of Leicester, his brother; Steven D. Scannell and his wife Mary of
Holland, his sister; Megan M. Scannell of Southbridge, aunts; Pat Grady of
Leicester, Lynne Thurber and her husband Gerald of Worcester, uncle;
Edward Lucey and his wife Nancy of Auburn, nieces, nephew and cousins. He
is predeceased by his brother Sgt. John D. Scannell in 2010.
Dr. Scannell was born in Worcester and later graduated from Leicester High
School where he was class valedictorian, earned his bachelor's degree from
Worcester Polytechnic Institute, and then his doctor of medicine degree from
University of New England College of Medicine in Biddeford, ME.
Dr. Scannell was a practicing physician at Fairlawn Rehabilitation Hospital.
Prior to practicing at Fairlawn, Neil practiced for 20 years at St. Vincent
Hospital, where he was recognized as Physician of the Year in 2022, based
upon his relentless dedication to his patients as well as his focus on
advancing medical informatics. Aside from being a consummate professional,
Neil always demonstrated his softer side in his sentimentality with family
members, his enjoyment of Disney and his amazing sense of humor. Neil was
a selfless and loving family member who placed others above himself. Neil
was also a passionate sports fan who enjoyed watching all the Boston sports
teams.
Neil's funeral will be held on Tuesday, Dec. 12th, from the MORIN FUNERAL
HOME, 1131 Main St., Leicester with a Funeral Mass at 10 a.m. in St. Pius X
Church, 1153 Main St., Leicester. Burial will follow in Pine Grove Cemetery,
Leicester. Calling hours are Monday, Dec. 11th from 5 to 7 p.m. in the funeral
