SPENCER: Richard P. "Bumpa" Chase, 94, died Thursday, July 10th, three weeks shy of his 95th birthday, at the Jewish Healthcare Center in Worcester. He was the husband of Elizabeth A. (Auren) Chase who died in 2019. He leaves a son, Donald P. Chase of Charlton, a daughter, Deborah L. Gradowski of Hubbardston, a brother, Raymond F. Chase of Plainfield, NJ, three grandchildren; Jason Chase and his wife Melissa of Spencer, Justin Chase of Southbridge, Jennifer Morse and her husband James of No. Brookfield, 6 great-grandchildren; Connor, Blayke, Jack, and Lucy Morse, Eyan and Griffin Chase and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a brother Ralph W. Chase in 2020 and a son-in-law Paul Gradowski in 2014.
Born in Worcester, he was the son of Howard B. & Ina E. (Altonen) Chase. He was a graduate of North High School, Class of 1948, and Worcester Junior College, Class of 1955. He served his country in the Army during the Korean War. Richard was an engineer for 40 years working at Warner & Swasey Co. in Worcester and also Concord Wire for several years, retiring in 1997. In 1987, while at Warner & Swasey Co., he was awarded a patent for the invention of a Dual Wheel Cylindrical Grinding Center, which is still in use today. He was a member of the Family Motor Coach Association of America and former member of the Worcester Area Sports Car Club and the Friendly Riders Motorcycle Club. He was a long-time member of the former 1st Congregational Church of Spencer and past Deacon there. He had a love for trains, RVing, cribbage, pitch, sudoku, jigsaw puzzles, and sailing.
A Funeral Service will be held Saturday, July 19th at 11 A.M. in the J. HENRI MORIN & SON FUNERAL HOME, 23 Maple Terr., Spencer. A calling hour will precede the Service from 10-11 A.M. Burial with Military Honors in Pine Grove Cemetery, Spencer will be at a later date and at the convenience of the family. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to either the Mary, Queen of the Rosary Church Food Pantry, 46 Maple St., Spencer, MA 01562 or to the Spencer Senior Center, 68 Maple St., Spencer, MA 01562.
